Friday of the Second Week of Lent
Daily Prayer
Almighty and Eternal God, who through Your Word reconciles the human race to Yourself, grant us the resolve to run forth to meet Your beloved Son, with righteous deeds at His coming, so that we may be worthy to possess the heavenly Kingdom.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Jesus said to them, “Did you never read in the Scriptures:
‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
by the Lord has this been done,
and it is wonderful in our eyes’.”
Reflection
Jesus is quoting Psalm 118 which was most likely written by, or at least about, His ancestor King David. This verse is precognition of Jesus as the Messiah to come, Jesus’ own crucifixion and Resurrection, transmuted into the building of the Christian church.
Psalm 118 is the final prayer song in the liturgy of the Passover feast, celebrating the time when the Israelites were freed from Egypt. Three hundred years later, in King David’s time, the people of Israel were rejected by other nations. But God made them to be the cornerstone of His plan for the salvation of the world. One thousand years after King David, his descendant Jesus became the new cornerstone.
