Daily Prayer and Reading 9/5

Labor Day
Lord, we pray on this Labor Day, not only for all workers, but also for those who struggle to find a job. Watch over those who work long hours for very little compensation. May there be greater justice for all who want and need to work. Amen.

Luke 6:6-11

Great crowds were traveling with Jesus,
and he turned and addressed them,
“If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother,
wife and children, brothers and sisters,
and even his own life,
he cannot be my disciple.
Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me
cannot be my disciple.
Which of you wishing to construct a tower
does not first sit down and calculate the cost
to see if there is enough for its completion?
Otherwise, after laying the foundation
and finding himself unable to finish the work
the onlookers should laugh at him and say,
‘This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.’
Or what king marching into battle would not first sit down
and decide whether with ten thousand troops
he can successfully oppose another king
advancing upon him with twenty thousand troops?
But if not, while he is still far away,
he will send a delegation to ask for peace terms.
In the same way,
anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions
cannot be my disciple.”

This week the Missionary Oblates in Zambia are praying for you.

One of the Oblates praying for you is Fr. Kasonde Musaba, OMI. Father Kasonde is currently the Treasurer for the Zambian delegation. He works diligently to make sure that the Oblates are good stewards of the donations received by benefactors to support the Zambian missions. Growing up in the town of Kasama, Fr. Kasonde said Sunday Mass was the highlight of his childhood and he felt a calling to the priesthood as young as age seven. His studies for the priesthood included time in the United States, first as a novice and then as a student at Oblate School of Theology. As a missionary priest, Fr. Kasonde was first involved in parish ministry in Zambia before becoming the Delegation Treasurer. “I want the driving force in my life to be one where I make a positive difference in the lives of others,” said Fr. Kasonde. “It is important to rise above mediocrity and complacency in our own lives while helping others do the same.”
